Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] tasyfa's (among others) recent post, here are a few of my favorite emo songs. Just to be a little different, the newest of these dates to 10 years ago, the oldest, River, is 35 years old--1971. (Which amazes me to realize that!) Just goes to show that emo wasn't invented with Jimmy Eat World. :-)

Edit: OK, I added a Green Day Song from 1998.

River - Joni Mitchell The saddest Christmas carol ever written, but so beautiful. If you only download one, this is it.

Backstreets - Bruce Springteen A deep, layered song about a relationship ended by infidelity, made more poignant by Bruce's tortured growling voice.

A Long December - Counting Crows I listened to this song over and over one December when I was in a bit of a sub-clinical depression a few years back. But my favorite line was always ...maybe this year will be better than the last...--a glimmer of hope.

Lightning Crashes - Live How can a song about a woman dying in childbirth not be sad? But even more than the lyrics, the melody is just so evocative by itself.

Driving With The Brakes On - Del Amitri Del Amitri was a Scottish pop/folk/rock group from the 90s that only achieved cult status in the US. Have you ever known that you should break up with someone, but you just can't? I always loved Justin Currie's beautiful throaty voice, but even more so on this song.

Heart of the Matter - Don Henley Most you are familiar with this actually uplifting song about finally coming to terms with a relationship that ended badly.

Alison - Elvis Costello Perhaps my favorite song about unrequited love. Billie Joe Armstrong will be performing at a tribute show for EC in May and I am praying he does this song (and we get a recording of it of course).

Redundant - Green Day I didn't see any Green Day on anyone's list. This is, to me, the song that fits in this category the best.

*Downloads with GLEE and ABANDON now that she has spiffy new external hard drive* SPEAKING OF DOWNLOADING. ...I don't suppose you could hook me up with those Warfield files, again? *whines and bats very pretty eyelashes*

Yay for external hard drives! Yay, I say! I now have four!! Two dedicated to Green Day goodness, one for backing up the laptop, and one for backing up the desktop. Thank God they're getting cheaper.

No problem with the Warfield files chica. Do you need the high quality files for burning to CD, or just for computer/ipod listening?

I...oooohh. Higher-quality files if you please, miss! *claps hands in delight*

And DAYUM, two whole external drives devoted to our boys? You must have a LOT more shit than I do. *stares* how big are your drives? Mine's 160 gigs... woah.

I'm a geek...My desktop's internal drive is 160 GB, one external drive (named GreenDay, ahem) is 80 GB, and I just added a 30 GB external drive that used to be the backup drive for my old desktop. And then I went out and bought a 250GB hard drive, just so I could back up the desktop + the GreenDay drive, because several years ago I had a hard drive failure and had to spend $400 to get my data back. It taught me a lesson!

When every DVD is 4 GB or so, disk space gets gobbled really quickly. (And then add pics and music...) I know I should just burn and delete, but I don't know, I'm a geek.

And I'll get those files up for you tonight.

I luff youuuu. And I'd much rather have it all on hard drives than on CD's I will inevitably LOSE or that will wind up as coasters, because I'm responsible like that. >.> and YAY! *snuggles*

If you have a FireWire (IEEE 1394) connection on your computer, I recommend these drives: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/owc-neptune-drives/

It's a Mac website, but the drives will work fine on a PC, and they're cheap!

I have 4 of these.

Click on the 1st link and see if you have a plug shaped like the one pictured, or with the little y-shaped symbol over it.

You can get some good deals at places like Fry's or Staples or Office Max on USB drives when stuff goes on sale. This is from Fry's and uses a USB connection.

"River" is absolutely one of the loveliest, saddest songs ever. Cheesily enough, it was used in an episode of "Alias" three years ago in the best context it ever could have been used, and I've loved it ever since. My mom is a giant Joni Mitchell fan. "Case Of You" is one of her favorites, and I cannot help but cry the minute "Both Sides Now" starts.

Lovely emo list, my dear. Definitely worthy of a bucketful of tears!

Who did "Both Sides Now" first, Judy Collins or Joni Mitchell? The version I grew up with was by Judy Collins so I got really confused when they played the Joni Mitchell version in "Love, Actually". *giggles*

You know? That's a great question! I just looked it up and found this one credit - that neither of them wrote it. The site I found said it was written by Clannad & Paul Young. My search was pretty quick, though, so that may not be totally right. But who recorded it first? I'm not sure at all.

I was going to reference the scene in "Love, Actually," though, because I bawl my eyes out every time. That song + Emma Thompson = an amazing use of one minute of screen time! Just heartbreaking.

And you know, that scene fucking kills me because those two? Could be my parents. Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson's characters in that movie are the reason I'll never show it to my mom despite the fact I think she'd love it otherwise. And that was always one of my mom's songs, so...yeah. Eeeek.

Oh I am with you on that. I think it's why the scene moves me as much as it does. That one moment, in which she smooths the sheets over the bed in an effort to regain her composure, with that very mom-like need to keep her mind together and not crack, yet she still does? It's like watching my mother's entire being in one short moment.

So I can completely understand where you're coming from there. My parental situation is a little different from the Rickman/Thompson characters, though, so I can only imagine how much more powerful and sad it can be when you identify that much more with the story! Plus, the Joni never helps with the not crying.

Both Sides Now was written by Joni Mitchell, and first appears on her album Clouds from 1969. It's probably been covered 80 kazillion times.

I could have put up a half dozen Joni Mitchell songs alone. I narrowed it down to River & Last Time I Saw Richard, but Case Of You was on the short list. That first line...Just before our love got lost...

I'll admit that it took me a little while to warm up to Joni. My mom would always kind of push her down my throat a bit, but then I got older was a bit more willing to actually listen to her, not to mention understand it a bit more. The first line is beautiful, but I really love the whole metaphor of the song: "I could drink a case of you and still be on my feet." It's not what you'd think the song is about from the title. Plus, her voice is just angelic.

Yeah. I love that song as well. One of my favorite TV performances is from MTV, with Billie and Mike only on acoustic guitars singing Redundant together. Guh...especially because it allows me to indulge in all my OTP fantasies.

ARGH the man is amazing.

Yes, yes, he is.

the Live song kills me and I can't listen to it for that reason

I'm slightly amused to find it on an emo list, b/c it's always been more of a sensual song for me. In fact, I wrote a rather explicit slash scene set to it in a Rosfic that *might* cure that reaction, lol. :D

Thanks, Mary! Will be by later to snag much. *smooches*

Yeah, feeling okay this morning. Still pissed but that's a separate issue, lol.

The scene is in chapter 15 in the sequel story (FC); Firsts is the original @ 13 chapters, followed by Full Circle @ 17, and a one-shot tag on the same thread, Silkening. It's Max/Liz/Michael and pretty much all relationshippy sex, LOL, no alien funny business atall. *grins*

Awww, you have such awesome taste in music! Which ... is actually what brought us together in the first place but that's beside the point :p Live and Counting Crows are two of my favorite bands also! :) And thank you for the music recs!

We really do have similar musical tastes, don't we! (Well, except for the Clay Aiken thing. :-) )

I've been a bad friend :-(, but I will be catching up soon!

BWAHAHAHA. Sadly, my love affair with good ol' Clay is pretty much over. I really loved him back when he was on American Idol (almost wrote Idiot! *cough* force of habit!) And I saw him in concert when he toured. I admit, it was a fun ride but it was short lived. Lol. And randomly, I REALLY wish I hadn't started up my lj when I was in my Clay phase... *sigh*

And, you're not a bad friend! You're one of the best! ♥

Crash away! That's why my journal entries are public. I just read your first journal entry and it reads alot like mine was. Be careful, it's addicting. :-) Feel free to browse through my memories for some fiction that I really liked. (Some of them are just the last chapter, becuase it contains the links to the earlier chapters.) I added most of the people on my f-list because of their exceptional writing skills, so any of their work/memories is a good place to start. If you really want to stick your hand in the crazy, read this thread. :-) Welcome aboard.

And old Elvis Costello never ceases to amaze me too. Yeah, Billie Joe performing Alison solo would pretty much kill me.
