So [livejournal.com profile] feels_like_fire linked me to this website with "The 25 Most Exquisitely Sad Songs in the Whole World." Some of the songs are right on, some are "Huh?" --- more than a few I'd never heard of, including the Number 1 song. Like, haven't they ever listened to Joni Mitchell? Jackson Brown? "Long, Long Time" by Linda Rondstat would have been my Number 1. Most heart-wrenching torch song ever written.

But looking at the list's Number 4 made me want to share it with y'all. It's Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nail's (Trent Reznor) "Hurt." Honestly, it's amazing, whether or not you care about Johnny Cash or NIN.

There are some other funny lists on that website too..."20 Rockin' Gay Moments" killed some time for me.

Hope you all are having a great day.

That cover is mind blowing, isn't it? It's just pure genius, that Johnny Cash ever found the song, recognized its potential and just owned it. He won a Grammy for it, didn't he?

That cover is guaranteed to make me cry every time I hear it. The simple piano and his vocals and how he seems to feel the words so deeply.

I'm quite interested to hear the original, but I don't think it can have the power of Johnny Cash singing it. And that's so rare for a cover version.

His cover is extremely sad, very unlike the original. The original is definately not as melancholy.

I was a bit dubious when I first heard he'd covered 'Hurt', but it turned out so great.

I believe you're right. It was his producer Rick Rubin who convinced him to do "Hurt."

The shots of June Carter cash standing on the stairs looking at him always gets to me.

I'll upload the original for you when I get home tomorrow. It doesn't have the melancholy feel of the cover.

I agree. I think this is a case where the cover is the better record.

I've never heard what Trent's opinion on it was, but I bet he appreciated it.
