From this week's Entertainment Weekly:

Most Obvious Fudging of the Rules

U2 & Green Day nominated for ''The Saints Are Coming''

The Academy's rules clearly state that the 49th annual Grammys is for ''recordings released during the Eligibility Year Oct. 1, 2005 through September 30, 2006.'' This rousing cover of a song by punk rockers the Skids wasn't released on iTunes until Nov. 14, 2006 — so what gives? Maybe it's because the song was originally performed during a NFL pregame show at the Louisiana Superdome in late September? If so, it seems like a crass bid to get the two mega-bands to perform on the Grammy telecast.

Maybe so, but you don't hear me complaining.

I found this story about the original lyrics to the song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" fascinating for some reason.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
It may be your last
Next year we may all be living in the past...

From the print edition, page 83:

"So how'd you like Pigeons of Shit Metal? Don't worry, that's the last show they're playing with us."

--Axl Rose's onstage review of GN'R opening act Eagles of Death Metal

I can't name a single song by EoDM, but it just confirms what a tool Axl Rose is, doesn't it?

You probably have Cherry Cola by EoDM; it was on one of Kat's mixes (Hearts Wide Open). But yes, Axl Rose is an utter ass. He thinks he's all that - always has done - and the problem is that enough people keep agreeing with him that his behaviour doesn't change. That man is a worse diva than any *woman* who's worked in showbiz!

As for the "obvious fudging," maybe it didn't come out on iTunes until November but it went up for sale on Rhapsody that night in September, so personally I think that counts even if it was a live version thereof. Same SONG.

That is a fascinating story about Have a Merry Little Christmas. I had no idea it was once far more depressing than hopeful! I LOVE that song. :) Thanks, Mary! ♥

I rather like the orgianl, dark version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, though I find myself singing the Sinatra version the most. That was really interesting.

My grandma is obsessed with Meet Me in St. Louis, so despite the ban on all things Christmas when I was a kid, I heard that song a lot. Like every single version. O_o I always found it to be super sad and depressing, even the peppier versions.

And yeah, Rhapsody released the live version that night, so I think it comes in under the wire. I don't like EW so much these days, they keep trying to charge me lots of money and the magazine isn't worth it. *pulls annoyed face*

Good point about the Rhapsody thing...that's probably how they're justifying it. I don't care as long as I get to see them play!

I found it interesting that the same guy wrote all 3 lyrics too, and that he's still alive collecting royalites. I wonder how much he's made off that song?

I don't think I knew the complete words at all, but the Sinatra version is the only one familiar to me.

I subscribe to EW so I don't look like a pop culture moron...it's hard work. :-)

I just got that issue in the mail yesterday. I think it's hilarious that even when you cancel during the three issue trial period and get your money back, magazines will send you more issues for like the next 2 months for free.

I am a pop culture moron most of the time. I know a lot about bands I'm into and TV shows I watch, but other than that I'm somewhat hopeless. ;)
