I spent way too much time that I didn't have the last couple of days on two things recommended by LJ friends:

1) Saw Brokeback Mountain. (That was only 2 hrs.)

2) Got completely sucked in to reading the Billie/Mike storylines in The Establishment RPG on JournalFen. (Many, many hours!)

I've been meaning to see BBM since before it came out, but I hadn't gotten around to it. I read the short story many months ago when I first heard about the movie, so I was curious how it would translate to the big screen, since it's a very interior story featuring mostly inarticulate characters. But Ang Lee and Larry McMurtry did an amazing job of conveying the nuances of the story. (If you haven't read it, you can download it here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/17c74p ) Interestingly, the movie that it brought to my mind was The Crying Game, because they are both movies that make you sit there afterwards and think "Well, what exactly is love anyway? How do you define it? What do you do about it?" And although the movie doesn't take place long ago, it struck me how different it would have been had they been in LA or SF or NY at the exact same time, instead of Wyoming. I like movies that make me think about them when they're over.

And my other project for the last few days: The Establishment RPG. It started from this entry in [livejournal.com profile] tasyfa's journal. As I mentioned, I had no clue about RPGs, but heh...anything with Billie Joe/Mike is OK with me. So I took Tas's advice and started at the beginning, going chronologically through Billie Joe's, Mike's and Tré's journals and now cover your ears because I am going to shout:

HOLY CHRIST! THAT IS SOME OF THE MOST FRICKIN' AMAZING STUFF I HAVE EVER READ!!!!!!!

And I'm just finishing December. I don't think I've ever read a book, fiction or non-, where I felt like I so completely understood what the relationship between two people is. The depth of the characterizations is just stunning. And the sex is easily some of the best written I have come across. I kept meaning to stop and take care of things having to do with, ya know, my life, but it was OK, just one more entry...oh wait it's a 2-parter...OK, I'll stop after this one...oh, but this one is short..... I'm going to finish it up tonight if I'm up until 3AM! Thanks Tas!

Next on my list: Watch Julie Taymor's Titus.

Some Green Day stuff:

This is Billie Joe Armstrong being interviewed by Larry Livermore about 5 years ago. It may be old news to some of you, but I had never seen it before. It has some amazing information about the circumstances of John Kiffmeyer's leaving the group. Worth a read if you haven't seen it before. I'd also love to know how BJA might answer some of these questions today.

I made a 700 MB XviD of an audience video bootleg of Green Day's 15 April 2005 Miami concert. If you have the bandwidth and the hard drive it's here:

YES!!! Another one sucked in. :D Isn't the Est arc fucking awesome??? I *told* you you would love it! Er, and warned about the lack of sleep and all that, lol. Hee! I'm so excited that you're reading it and getting all invested in it. I love it SO much.

Ooooo merci for the bootleg. *smooches*

You're welcome!

What does "players not puppets" mean at the top of some entries?

Those entries read like regular story prose, as opposed to the group chats which are the puppets interacting and look more screenplay-ish. So far as I'm aware, that's the only thing it means.

It stems from the early days of the game and it's just a reminder for anyone who might get confused that the entry in question means that it's NOT a journal post; it's a record of something that happened in the character's life.

(For the record, we call our characters "puppets" like sockpuppets, in that we're manipulating them from behind the scenes. Don't ask me where "mun" referring to writers came from--I think maybe "mundane," but that's merely a guess.)

Sometimes people would forget and try to comment on the entries as their characters. Yeah, I know. People are dumb.

This is Billie mun, by the way, and you just made my day. thank you, darling. *hugs and smooches*

I completely agree with that. I mean, HOLY FUCK. I spend truly obscene amounts of time on those journals... and sleep takes second priority. Seriously. I was going to suggest that you send your gushing in to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], one of the writers of said amazing Billie journal, since she's so nice and loves feedback... but I see she already found it, lol. Welcome to the Establishment love!

Reading every entry feels like opening a Christmas present. I'm gonna be sorry when I finally catch up and finish them all.

Well they ARE still writing it, lol, so it's not like it just dead-ends. :) And Tré/Quentin is really just getting started, too.

O wow and that interview, with Larry Livermore...I've never read all of it before, I think I've seen little bits out of context, but never the whole thing. I just read the whole thing, and I just admire Billie soooo much. Thank you for posting the link- I think I'm even going to use a quote from this in my next fic, it fits so well...thanks!!

Anytime! I learned a whole bunch I didn't know from that interview. I think it's pretty amazing. I would seriously love to read an in depth interview like that today with Billie Joe Armstrong.

I totally would too. It explained sooooo many things. There are actually a LOT of interview questions that I'd like to know the answers for *now*, post-American Idiot. Like in Egos & Icons, Billie says that if they could go back, he honestly doesn't know if they would sign with a major label. But in the years since then, and with the runaway success of AI, the band's finally accepted their status as rock stars and it would be fascinating to hear what they think coming off of the last year and a half.

I completely agree- it would be amazing to see Billie answering these questions now, after AI. And I was completely reminded of that quote from Egos & Icons too, and I'd like to hear how Billie-- and all of the guys-- feel about where they are now. Something tells me they're pretty happy with it, lol, but yeah I agree it would be absolutely fascinating to hear what they think of this past year and a half, in a real, in depth interview. Fascinating.

I'm pretty sure there are no more regrets. Billie Joe seems to have embraced his inner rock star/rock god pretty tightly....and I love him for it. He's matured enough that he doesn't give a flying fuck what the old (and they are old) Gilman crowd thinks anymore.

I agree with revid's post below that there wouldn't be the same regrets b/c they've totally grown into their own skins now, but it would still be fascinating to know. I actually submitted it as a question for the Q&A thing on the Idiot Club but I don't think the people who choose what gets answered actually *choose* anything, lol. I think they must pick out of a hat b/c there's some stupid damn questions.
