The One About the AMAs
Nov. 23rd, 2009 09:59 pmSo the thing about being an Adam Lambert fantard, is that you just never know what to expect, although in hindsight, you think, Well of course Adam would do that, he's Adam!
Some thoughts about the AMAs in general. It didn't turn quite into the MJ lovefest that I predicted, even though he won 4 of 5 or something? But was did happen was even more barfworthy -- a Taylor-fucking-Whatshername lovefest. Yo Taylor, I'm real happy for you, and Imma let you finish, but you can't sing your way out of a paper bag. Seriously, she stretches the capability of Auto-Tune to the limit. But hey, she's young and cute and sweet as a basket of kittens and puppies.
As for the rest of the performances, Some were execrable (Rihanna), some were sad compared to the past (JLo, Whitney--who, to her credit, did not lip sync), some were very good (Kelly, Green Day), but two were WTF, Holy Shit: Lady Gaga and Adam. Gotta talk about the last three.
I was disappointed that LG lip synced the first part of her set (Bad Romance), but I'll forgive her. Because as I said on IM to
feels_like_fire, she has steak to back up the sizzle. Playing a piano ON FIRE? That's pretty bad ass. Not sure about the flesh colored boy suit with the crotch strap that looked like a peen (a shout out to the rumors maybe?), but the woman can sing and play and write a song. Which is a rare combo in pop music today.
My babies, Green Day. I was excited to hear that I was going to get the one-two punch of the two acts I wanted to see at the end, but something was off last night. Some of it was the song, 21 Guns. It just wasn't the right energy for that point in the show. It is my favorite song off of that CD, but it wasn't right for that moment. They should have done EJN. Also, bb Billie's voice was not in it's finest form. BUT AT LEAST THEY DON'T LIP SYNC, god dammit! But they were still better on an off night than most performers are the best show of their career.
Adam, OMG, Adam. I have had 8473950345934 different thoughts on his performance in the last 24 hours, but they've all sort of distilled down to a core now. Initially I was watching it live on a crappy computer livestream, since I am on the west coast. Because the video was so poor, my first impression was of the audio mostly. And that was unfortunate. For one, the mix absolutely sucked. Not Adam's fault at all, but it was horrible and made his vocals hard to hear, and I'm sure it contributed to two, it was not Adam's best vocal performance. It's hard to dance and run up and down stairs and sing, whch is why lip syncing is so prevalent on these shows. So initially, I really missed all the fuss about the crotch grinding and boy kissing and girl fondling, because I was thinking about the voice, but then I went to
ontd_ai and
hooplamagnet. And boy, did the hand-wringing and pearl-clutching get to me. People were saying shit like all his upcoming appearances will be cancelled and his career is over---AND THESE WERE FANS!
The performance if you want to know of which I babble:
So when I caught it on TV 3 hours later, I was surprised and relieved. Yes the vocals were off in a few spots, but no one cared, they were too busy watching the spectacle that is Adam. ABC did edit out the mock bj, but they did leave in Adam kissing Tommy (who identifies as straight, BTW), which, ngl is the hottest fucking thing I've seen since Billie lip-locked Mike back in 2005. Here's my proof:
Haters gonna hate, and if you hated Adam, you still will. Plenty of fans were offended, and that's OK too. It's just the ones that think Adam should change to conform to their image of what they want that will have to learn to accept it or GTFO. But I think he wanted to break from the Idol bubble in a big way, and he did. It was like him talking to Rolling Stone about his drug use and sex life. Maybe it was TMI, but now it's out there and no one will ever be able to say they didn't know what Adam is all about. It's now informed consent, folks.
So now that the SRS BZNS is out of the way. I loved the eye makeup, I love the sparkly suit, I loved the blatant sexuality of it all. I was not offended by the bj act (which was censored out of the west coast feed!) although I get why others were. (I DO NOT accept the "What about the Children????" argument at all, however. It's 11 o'clock at night and it's not Adam's job to parent your kids.) However, anyone offended by the kiss can kiss my ass. Everyone giggled when Madonna and Britney did it years ago, and I hate the "Well it's OK for hot girls but not for hot boys" bullshit. Adam actually said as much in a post show interview. He is fearless and feels no need to apologize for anything.
The other great part was the Ninja roll. He tripped going up the stairs, and amazingly enough, continued to sing while rolling across a platform 10 feet off the ground! The guy is a pro, so much so that there was debate as to whether it was intentional or not.
I spent several hours today reading the blogs and reviews and it appears Adam got what he set out for: to be the most talked about performance of the night. And a bit surprisingly to me, most of it is positive, in a weird sort of way. Almost no one commented on the less than stellar vocals which bothered me so much. He's even in Leno's monologue tonight.
Adam is going to be on Letterman Wednesday night, doing a completely different song in a completely different style, in his continuing attempt to keep people scratching their heads.
The album is out today, we'll see I it goes. Word is that Susan Boyle's CD of sappy covers may move 500K units, primarily because that demographic hasn't figured out illegal downloading and everyone is getting it for great aunt Nelly for Xmas. I'm still sticking with my guess of 100k -150K for For Your Entertainment. The reviews continue to be along the lines of B+, which is not bad for an album thrown together in 5 months.
I chose the Icon from Adam's Top 13 performance of Black or White for a reason. That was the week that the pictures of him kissing his ex boyfriend broke all over the media. He really didn't know what was going to happen. He came out and gave a performance that was vocally a little bit of a hot mess, but a treat to watch, and Simon told him they were watching the birth of a star. So, yeah. Subtle enough for you?
So friends, what's up with you?
