American Idol was a hot mess on two levels tonight. First, what a bunch of utter BS that only 2 judges spoke after each contestant. And it was either Randy/Kara or Paula/Simon. THAT was the only way they could figure out how to get the show in under an hour? Are you fucking kidding me? Forty-two minutes of show outside of commercials MINUS (2 minutes x 7 songs x 2 more minutes of puff piece) = 14 minutes for judging. In other words, each judge gets 30 secs. How fucking hard is that? And Paula is getting worse and worse. The scripted lines are so obviously memorized beforehand, since they have absolutely NOTHING to do with the performance she (supposedly) just watched. And if I were Anoop, Matt or Kris, I would be pretty pissed off that I didn't hear Simon's opinion, since, let's face it, his is the only one that counts. And they STILL went over time.

I like Quentin Tarantino as much as the next guy, but as a mentor? WTF? Yeah, it was a movie theme, but still. He was teats on a bull tonight.

The other huge problem tonight was...THE PERFORMANCES. It had its moments, but the overall impression was "This was the best they could do?" Oh God, the song choices. Not one but TWO Bryan Adams songs, plus three giant cheesefest songs, one WTF? song (from my dear BSC (batshitcrazy) Adam), but I give props to Kris for picking an out of the way (but Oscar winning) contemporary song. Best song choice of the night.

~Allison--Don't Want to Miss a Thing: She got the reviews tonight of LAST weeks performance. Seriously. She wasn't all that good tonight. But I want her to stay, so I won't complain too much.

~Anoop--Everything I Do: Not bad, but so boring I had to look up what he sang because an hour later I don't recall. And why does he always look scared to death up there?

~Adam--Born to Be Wild: Because you were having such a good time, so was I, baby. Fun, over the top, had that fucking awesome glory note at the end. Loved the androgynous emo look, the pelvic thrusts, the mad running around the stage. Not my favorite of yours, but considering we had six musical Ambiens tonight, thanks for bringing the Dexadrine.

~Matt--Have You Really Ever Loved A Woman: Again, like Anoop, not really memorable to me. Thought he really went off key with some of his runs/trills. He would have been better just singing it straight up.

~Danny--Endless Love: Sorry [livejournal.com profile] and_ed, you're not gonna like this. A average performance of a karaoke song. It started out really rough, but did improve as it went on. But why do the judges talk about him like he's so daring and creative and unique? He's done the exact same song every. single. week. No variety, at all.

~Kris--Falling Slowly: Kris gets the prize for best song choice of the night. A beautiful, current song. I wish he had done more with it performance-wise though. It was a little too wobbly and low for his range in the beginning, but got better. He should have taken QT's advice and done it sitting on a stool with a guitar.

~ Lil--The Rose. Crappy choice of song. Crappy performance. Crappy attitude with the judges. Who the hell is voting for her?

Bottom three: Lil (by a mile), Danny, Matt. (But tomorrow will be Lil, Matt, Anoop.)

Lil should go, but it will be Matt or Anoop.

~In other news, there is another Green Day club show tonight at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, and they are filming the show for some purpose. I decided to sit this one out, because my sources tell me there will be a fourth "secret" show at a different, smaller club tomorrow night, so I will be spending a large part of my day scoring tix to that, then hitting the 101 for the 4 hour trek north again.

Sigh, the things we do for our bands.

I taped it so I could see my Quentin since I don't get Inglorious Basterds until August and I desperately need my Q fix. Mmm. Can't wait to see his stupid face. Am not really looking forward to the performances (The Rose -- REALLY?!) but I'll def watch your boy :)

I've never been able to get into AI for an entire season. I think the last one I watched after the try-outs was the season with Jennifer Hudson in...2004, I think? That said, having Quintin as a mentor is fucking nuts! I love him and his weirdness and his affinity for black women but he shouldn't be dispensing musical advice.

I'm still holding out hope that Green Day will do a "secret" show in LA before the month is over. I would love to be there for the Oakland/SF shows but money's tight these days. I'll probably have to start asking the 'rents for money soon. Would you be coming to a LA show if it happens? You can totally be my +1. ;-)

BTW, I went on an interview yesterday for a Pharmacy Desk Auditor position in Culver City. *crosses fingers*

I will be no doubt rambling in my own lj later but yeah, yawn-inducing song choices and meh performances and wtf Quentin Tarantino all adds up to a very disappointing AI tonight. And I'm totally with you on the judging thing - assinine idea, man. And Paula just needs to shut the fuck up, full stop.

Good luck getting tickets for the show tomorrow, hopefully most people haven't caught on yet. I have an appointment at the same time it's rumored to be happening, so it looks like I'm gonna be 0 for 4 on secret shows. Anyway, while cleaning my apartment I realized that I still have the Anatomy textbook you loaned me last year. While I know you really don't want it back right now since it might be carrying some of whatever bug I'm having issues with, if you'd like I can still return it at some future point when you're in SF.

Finally got to see your Adam perform! Let me tell you, thank god he was on third because if I'd had to watch any more of that I'd have gone Elvis all over the tv and shot it. Not that I have a gun but, you know, the thought was there.

*LOVED* Adam's performance. Very theatrical but his voice is extraordinary and the theatrics are no more so than any good lead vocalist of any good rock band. He reminded me a bit of Freddie Mercury in that respect.

So, there's a chance I'll be taping it in future so that I can see him.

Nice choice in pbf, btw.

Good luck with the job interview!!!!!

This is the first time I've really been invested in a contestant, although I've watched it casually before.

I wouldn't mind going to an LA show for sure!

Yeah, I'll get the book from you at some point soon.

I'm fence sitting about tonight's show. I hate the fact that it's tix at the door only. :-(

Adam reminds me of Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant. Hard to beat that for someone of my age.

I wish you had broadband so I could show you some of his other performances...every one is different. The most fun is wondering "what he's going to do this week?"
